1.       Examples of English colonies of the 17th century that sought to provide religious toleration.

·         Maryland attempted to promote religious toleration, but gave no protection to anyone who did not profess to believe in Jesus Christ.

·         Pennsylvania -- William Penn made religious toleration part of the basic law in their colonies, but only Christians could take part in government.

2.       Examples of English colonies of the 17th century did not provide religious toleration

·         Massachusetts – The Puritans left England to escape religious persecution, but were intolerant of other religions in the New World.

·         New Hampshire – Similar to Massachusetts.

·         Connecticut – Less strict than Massachusetts, but still intolerant.

·         Virginia – The law of the land mandated that Virginians worship in the Anglican church.

3.       Examples of English colonies of the 17th century that did provide religious toleration.

·         Rhode Island – Founded on the principles of religious toleration and the separation of church and stae.

·         New Jersey – Established on the basis of religious freedom, and therefore had a mixture of religions.

·         Delaware – Had a mixture of religions.

·         New York – Established by the Dutch, so the Anglican Church came later.
