The sympathetic nerves stimulate the heart while the parasympathetic nerves reduce stimulation of the heart, thereby reducing the rate at which it beats. Fast breathing and blood flow can trigger the brain to increase the heart rate. When your breathing is slow and controlled, parasympathetic stimmulation will increase, causing a decrease in heart rate.
