To graph a parabola we need to know the coordinates of its vertex, focus and the equation of its axis.  A parabola is symmetric about its axis. 

 

The standard equation of parabola with vertex (h,k) and vertical axis x=h and focus lying on its axis, p units from the vertex is (x-h)2 = 4p(y-k)

 

Similarly, the standard equation of a parabola with vertex(h,k) and horizontal axis y=k is expressed as (y-k)2 =4p(x-h)

 

 

 

 

If we are given the equation of a parabola, we can easily identify its vertex, Axis and focus by comparing with the standard equations, identify its x and y intercepts and accordingly sketch the graph
