In case of a fraction, numerator is called the Dividend and the denominator is called the Divisor.  A mixed fraction ( or a mixed number) is one which consists of an integer and a proper fraction.( a fraction in which numerator is less than the denominator).

When the Dividend is greater than the Divisor, we determine  the greatest integer, whose multiplication with the Divisor  would give a product that would be less than  or equal to the Dividend.  This integer is called the Quotient. Having determined such a Quotient,  we  subtract the product from the Dividend and   this difference is called the Remainder,

Thus a fraction in which numerator is greater than the denominator,  will be equivalent to a mixed fraction consisting of an Integer (which will be the Quotient) and the proper fraction  consisting of the Remainder in the numerator and the Divisor in the Denominator

Foe example, consider a fraction 9/4 .  Here 9 is the Dividend  and 4 is the Divisor.  The greatest integer which can be determined as Quotient would be 2, because product of 2 and 4 would be  8, which is less than 9.  This would give a Remainder 9 – 8 = 1.  The fraction 9/4 can thus be written as the whole number 2 + a proper fraction ¼..   This is usually written as 2.
