Multiplying a 2 digit number

If a two digit number is to be multiplied by a single digit number, it is necessary to multiply the digit at unit place first and then the digit at the tens place of the multiplicand. Example 38x6, multiply 6 with 8 first, we get 48. Write 8 as a digit at unit place of the product and carry 4 to the next multiplication.  Then multiply 6 with 3, we get 18. Add to this the carry over number 4, it becomes 22.  Hence the answer will be 228.

If a two digit number is multiplied with a two digit number, same procedure is followed. Start with the multiplication  of multiplicand  by the digit at the unit place of the multiplier and then with the digit at the tens place of the multiplier.  In the first row write the product  obtained by multiplication of the digit at the unit place of the multiplier.  In the second row write the product obtained by the multiplication of the digit at the tens place of the multiplier.  Left  shift the second row by  a unit place before adding the numbers in the two rows.  Example 38x18 ( 38 is the multiplicand and 18 is the multiplier)

                                                              38 x 18

                                                           _________

                                                               304

                                                               38x

                                                           _________

                                                               684
