An arms race between Germany, Great Britain, France and Russia and took place during the run up to the First World War. In particular, Germany's envy of Britain's superior navy in the early years of the 20^th century resulted in a race to build Dreadnought-class ships. This arms race lasted until June 1914, when the First World War broke out.
