Yes, registration is free

Q. 9   Why do I need to register with SchoolTrainer.com?
Registering with SchoolTrainer is the first step in getting you started with our online academic coaching services. After registration, you can immediately access our free homework help service.

Q. 10   Is there any limit on the number of sessions I can take per week?
No, there is no limit, but we discourage students from becoming too dependent on SchoolTrainer’s free homework help service. With respect to one-on-one sessions with our academic coaches, most of our students have regularly sessions once or twice a week. Some homeschooled students may require daily coaching sessions if their parents are not able to cover all the required subjects.

Q. 11 What is Academic Coaching?
An academic coach, like an athletic coach, is someone who works with you over an extended period of time to help you reach your peak potential. A good coach observes your approach and techniques, makes observations and suggests changes to your approach. Along the way, a coach builds a relationship with students and provides encouragement as they implement new ways of learning. One-on-one sessions are a great way to learn how to fine-tune your academic skills.

Q. 12 What is an academic coach?
The SchoolTrainer philosophy is that most students are capable of grasping the content of their classroom instruction. The difference between high and low performance, in our view, arises from a deficiency in strategy and insufficient practice. Teachers, especially at the middle school and high school level, typically do not teach “study strategies” because they expect student to come up with their own strategies over time. By helping the student work on strategy and drills, coaches build confidence, motivation and self-reliance through individualized study strategies. Students are thus able to save time by studying smarter, not harder.

Q. 13 Where do you conduct the academic coaching?
Online, via our virtual classrooms. Students log in and interact with an academic coach via an interactive whiteboard, chat and voice over internet technology.

Q. 14 What age levels do you serve?
Our students are mostly middle and high school students, but we also have some students who are outside that range.

Q. 15 Are you a tutoring service?
Many people think of us as a tutoring service, but we see ourselves slightly differently. A tutoring service focuses on “fixing a problem” and reviewing content, and some of the online tutoring companies provide a different tutor for every session. SchoolTrainer also provides help with homework, but our coaches don’t consider themselves "homework helpers" – they provide a help that is much more fundamental and they build a long term relationship with the students assigned to them. They patiently help students become better at doing homework, so the need for “homework help” declines over time, enabling the coach to focus on academic performance. Our approach is to combine “homework help” –of the kind that some students get from friends and family – with drills and advice to improve speed and accuracy.

Q. 16 How does your process work?
Coaches work in 50-minute sessions at regular times every week, e.g. Tuesday’s at 5pm or Thursdays at 7am. We are available online around the clock. You can have one or multiple sessions per week, and you can discontinue the service any time. We specialize in one-on-one sessions between an academic coach and a student, so each session is customized and flexible, depending on the students needs as they evolve. We treat each students as an individual with distinct needs. Each coach therefore must determine the best way to work with each student. Students who find their skills and performance improving continuously over time may choose to work with SchoolTrainer for months or years.

Q. 17 How do we get started?
For our younger students, parents are usually involved in the decision to get started, and we will have an initial online or phone consultation with them. Some of our older students sign up on their own, without any parental involvement. Signing up is simple: we have an Enroll Now form, and payment can be made via PayPal. We need a day or two to assign an appropriate coach, and the initial online session (via our online classroom) is spent understanding where the student is today, where he or she would like to be (in terms of performance), and thinking through the best options to achieve the student’s goals.

Each sessions lasts for 50 minutes, and a student can sign up for one or more sessions at regular times each week. You can view our pricing here.

Q. 18 How do you measure success?
We measure results based on feedback from students and parents. We track whether the student feels motivated and confident, and we also keep track of the student’s performance in school (based on inputs provided by the student or parent). In our experience, it takes time for students to change their study habits, and therefore it takes time for results to appear in the form of better grades or teachers’ comments. There is no easy path to success – better performance requires not only good strategies, but also practice and perseverance.

Q. 19 Can you help with Individualized Education Programs (IEP's)?
We work with other companies that are experts in designing and implementing IEP's that work.

Q. 20 Do you perform assessment testing?
We work with other companies that are experts in this area. Their test results are useful inputs in our process.
